I’ve been given a wonderful opportunity to review Cyber Minds, written by Shira Rubinoff.

What’s interesting about this book is that it’s not only written from a psychology point of view. It is presented in an interview format with questions posed to the top minds — C-level executives and industry experts with deep expertise, on their take on the future direction of AI and cybersecurity.

These discussions revolve around IoT, blockchain, autonomous driving, quantum computing, all of which caused me to re-think about the security implications on my research work in building next-generation payment systems.

For example, should a smart voice assistant device becomes infected with a malicious sleeping agent, how would my voice solution product guard against these attacks? How do I implement effective identify verification measures over voice when AI learns to mimic someone’s speech?

Here’s 4 quotes from the book that I think is worth pondering about:

I think many companies do have the data; they just don’t
know where all that data is, or whether it is usable.

— Mark Lynd, on whether organizations have the data that’s needed to be successful when implementing AI.

…most organizations do not conduct threat-hunting exercises and thus are not aware when they have been compromised. It usually takes around 100 days for an organization to realize that it’s been breached…

— Tom Kellermann, on data breaches on the news.

… you can’t have privacy without security and you can’t
have security without privacy.

— Brigadier General Gregory Touhill, on security around quantum computing.

… they’re (automation) going to
replace the type of work that employees are doing, so they can then focus on higher-value work in the organization.

— Barmark Meftah, on whether automation will take over jobs.
